just record on 880. we'll tell you more about that plus the rest of your morning drive. >> good morning, it's wednesday, october 10. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:01 now. and we are following a developing story this morning. a fire in union city. >> a firefighter has been injured while fighting a large fire at a strip mall there. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran tells us that apparently kate the roof collapsed. >> that's right. the roof collapsed. it was one of the biggest challenges that crews had to face here and they are still on scene now but to join us or to tell us the basics of what happened, we're joined now by deputy chief dave lord to give us the basics. thank you for joining us. i'm sure you're very busy. what happened? >> shortly after 1:00 this morning, a passerby reported some light smoke coming from the corner unit of the billion. crews showed up about four minutes later. at that point we had some fire coming out of the front door of the occupancy in the corner. they advance and the hose line

inside and kind of got some early recognition they might have fire over them in the attic so they backed out. a few minutes laterred this a partial roof collapse and the fire was exposed in the attic. >> reporter: you said it started in the corner of the building. what made it spread so quickly? >> it kind of has a common attic up there so they had a lot of attic space to run. not really sure what started the fire but it definitely had a good head start on us before we arrived. >> reporter: what happens from here on out? i know you have firefighters and investigators standing by. what's the next step? >> so the next steps are to make sure we have no fire left and then make sure the building has enough structural integrity left for us to make some access to it and start the investigation. >> reporter: and again, no reason to suspect arson? >> not at this point. until you get the investigators in there and can dig around for a while -- it will take most of the morning to figure it out.

>> reporter: thank you, deputy chief. you mentioned a firefighter was injured in this. but he will be okay. he has been treated at a local hospital. residents that were evacuated are now allowed back in their homes. we are live in union city. cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. in richmond, right now firefighters are on the scene of a pallet fire. people reported seeing it from the eastshore freeway. firefighters expect it stay there for a fewer hours. they are still trying to determine a cause but we're told there were lightning strikes in the area about the time the fire began. chopper 5 is heading up to check it out. we are going to bring you those pictures shortly. the san francisco board of supervisors siding with ross mirkarimi and gave the suspended sheriff his job back last night. cbs 5 reporter immaculate conception explains the shocking end to all the drama and i think a lot of folks surprised this morning i would imagine. >> reporter: a lot of stunned reaction still coming in this

morning. last night, 7 of the 11 supervisors voted to remove ross mirkarimi from office, nine supervisors needed to do so for that to happen. he is going to come to work at city hall this morning. he his son and wife venezuelan actress appearing at the meeting last night. four supervisors voted for mirkarimi to keep his job despite his false imprisonment conviction for bruising his wife's arm days before taking office in january. it is probably going to be an awkward day at city hall after the mayor's month-long push to get him out. >> i look forward after something that has profoundly affected our relationship and i think our relationship as it intersects with the people of san francisco that we have work to do and that we both need to rise above the politics and get

the job done. >> reporter: the sheriff's wife spoke as well yesterday continuing to stand by her man. >> finally i see that justice was done. and i have a message for mayor lee. you have to be a bigger mayor because we have our sheriff back finally. >> reporter: the mayor sent out a statement last night saying, quote, the board's decision returned the convict domestic batterer to lead the sheriff's office and i'm concerned about the city's nationally recognized domestic violence programs. i will do everything in my power to ensure that abusers continue to be held accountable. end quote. so mirkarimi is going to be meeting with top level sheriff's officials to try to figure out the best way to transition back into office. live at city hall in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. some rain and lightning in parts of the bay area last night. >> lawrence said he woke up and saw all kinds of lightning outside. >> i drove over and didn't know

if it was real or not. kind of in that in between stage. we verified we are seeing lightning strikes out there now, some flashes off the coastline. and, of course, we'll have some raindrops. last night in san jose just after 9:00 they had a good downpour, .09" of rain reported in the san jose area. they may get some more especially as we head toward this afternoon. could see some more thunderstorms erupting in that direction, as well. so watch out for that. right now we are still seeing more showers some of that pulling off the coastline. you see it rotating around that low off the coast but some thunderstorms ripping through the half moon bay area early on this morning. it looks like we have a chance of more showers as the core of the low will start to sag to the south but the wrap around moisture around the low could drag more showers and thunderstorms into the bay area but the focus is going to move further south in the santa cruz mountains and san jose by the afternoon. temperatures now in the 40s and 50s. afternoon hours not that bad. some partly cloudy skies mid- 70s in the valleys. 60s maybe a few 70s around the bay and 60s at the coastline.

when will things settle down? we'll talk about that coming up. right now, let's check on the roads with elizabeth. >> first a live look at some of our bridges. here's a live look at the san mateo bridge and everything is fro and clear both directions westbound 92 those taillights 14 minutes out of hayward towards foster city. northbound 880 by 101 they are doing some roadwork in that area. at this point no injuries. looks like they lanes are blocked either and we are not seeing any big delays. the roadwork will slow you down. we'll continue to watch t we have been following a pallet five in richmond the 500 block of brookside drive near rum hill boulevard. a big orange glow apparently seen in the sky from a distance. heads up that's what's burning. we are sending chopper 5 to the scene. elsewhere, here's live look at the nimitz also in the east bay 880 through oakland. you're looking good past the coliseum towards downtown oakland no delay across that stretch. and similar story across the golden gate. you will find some paving work.

that's what's slowing down that drive time towards 580 and the golden gate bridge toll plaza. various lanes blocked until about 6:00 towards the waldo tunnel. that's traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. an 11-year-old boy his mother and another woman are recovering after they were struck by a car outside an antioch school. it happened yesterday morning outside turner elementary school. the speeding suv ran through an intersection plowed into the pedestrians and crashed into another car. the driver and a passenger then got out and ran. two women managed to push the boy out of the car's path. >> all you heard was a car like going [ noise ] and then my mom started running towards me and they pushed me out the way and then they both got hit. >> police say a man later returned said he was the driver and admitted he had been drinking. he was arrested. police are still searching for the other person. a teen has life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in

the mission district. the 17-year-old girl stabbed multiple times near 21st and valencia streets about 7:00 last night. shortly before that, several people were involved in a fight in that same area. the gang task force now trying to determine if the fight and the stabbing were related. on the bay area watch on thissens with a san mateo man is due to enter a plea concerning an abduction at parkside elementary school in san mateo. a 9-year-old girl was briefly grabbed from a bathroom last month. today is the one-year anniversary of the "occupy" oakland movement. activists plan to mark the occasion with a barbecue pot luck at snow park, and other events. the as and the giants were both on the brink of elimination but last night both teams came up big. >> deep right center field coco crisp going back to the track leaps and has it! >> very nice.

video.. rescuers went out to pier 39, after they reced calls abou this is exclusive video we brought for you live yesterday. rescuers went to pier 39 after they received calls about two sea lions that had fishing line caught around their necks. they were entangled. they shot a dart to sedate one of them, netted him, hauled him into a crate. it turns out the sedation wasn't enough but the wire finally got cut off. the sea lion's nickname is blonde bomber. it's expected to be okay. the second one was scared by a tour boat and took off in the water. maybe he will come back and they can help him out, as well.

we had that on at noon. the sea lion wasn't moving at all. >> some people in the area saw him moving a bit. glad he got the help. 5:16. let's check the roads. >> that is your domain, liz. take it away. >> thank you. pretty quiet out there still so far this morning. i was just talking to my producer, we have been checking with the chp and overall things are moving at top speeds. so here's actually a live look. we have traffic camera across the bay area. this is a live look closer towards the dublin interchange. it's actually there by the tassajara exit, free and clear through the altamont pass and live but starting now to see changing colors on our sensors so usually that's one of our first spots to back up. we'll let you know as soon as that drive time begins to tick up. the eastbound lanes of highway 4 may have just reopened that because we're no longer seeing brake lights. this is about the time they pick up the full freeway closure at loveridge.

westbound 4 still looks good so no delay yet out of antioch. mass transit we just checked in with bart so far no delay with bart, ace, muni, caltrain and your ferries. quick look at 880/237 in milpitas where things are flowing nicely for the silicon valley ride. for more on the weather forecast, it was a crazy night. >> this is a crazy morning around the bay area. we have some lightning strikes showing up so don't be surprised if you see that flash and yes indeed, lightning erupting in toward the half moon bay area early on. things settling down a little bit right now but you can see numerous lightning strikes. that moisture now rotating around an area of low pressure beginning to push away just a bit from the coastline but yeah, things even a little unsettled over the santa cruz mountains. even some scattered showers there. so it could be a wild day around the bay area. you can see the main circulation pattern as the low continues to sag a little further to the south. but you have more of that moisture out there that could rotate back up in toward the bay area so we'll see partly cloudy skies on and off. it looks like the rain chances are going to shift further

south throughout the day today with a better chance toward the santa cruz mountains in the san jose area with some thunderstorms this afternoon. so a chance of thunderstorms this morning, mostly cloudy as you make your way inside the bay, partly cloudy in the valleys temperatures mainly in the 50s. this afternoon a slight chance toward the coastline and again that rain line the possibility of thunderstorms going to shift further south in toward the santa cruz mountains and the san jose area so watch out for that. could be a very interesting afternoon. staying unsettled until it area of low pressure moves out of the way. it's going to sag into southern california. before then looks like a chance of showers continuing for today and possibly into tomorrow morning, as well. numbers looking like this. 71 in san jose. 63 degrees in pacifica. east bay temperatures running up into the mid-70s in some spots. and inside the bay those numbers only into the 60s. so as you get over the next couple of days things settle down. the weekend looking good looks like we could see some temperatures moving back to the low 80s by sunday. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, a stanford university professor is one of two americans who won

october 10, i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'll michelle griego. time now 5:30. we're following breaking news right now. fire crews are still on the scene of a fire that dammed businesses in a strip mal. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live in union city with more on hour a firefighter was injured during the fight of that fire. good morning, kate. >> good morning, frank. we hear the firefighter is expected to be okay. he suffered some deep cuts to the back of his hand. but he has been treated at a local hospital. i did speak with one of the business owners who is basically his market was completely damaged. he says it's all done for at this point but they are hoping that they can rebuilt after this. but as you can see, crews here are still on scene. there's been extensive damage to this complex here about 9 or 10 businesses were affected. some again were completely damaged now business owners are here standing by -- they want to go back in and see exact his what happened in their store. firefighters were work would go put out hot spots in active

areas. voters are onfirefighters on are scene. at one point the roof collapsed making it difficult for firefighters to fight but we spoke with the deputy chief from alameda county fire who says the whole reason they were able to hit it so quickly is because they got a head start. >> we got some crews on top and started cutting holes and we had some active fire on both sides. so i think fire may have had a little head start on us. >> reporter: this is the shopping center off dyer and alvarado boulevard and the alameda county fire department says it's too soon to call it arson. it's an ongoing investigation. live at the scene again, you can see multiple trucks here. it's clean-up at this point. and they expect to be throughout the entire morning. as you can see back there i saw that pretty much that entire part of the parking lot has been flooded. so they will have a lot of work

to do. still no cause at this point. but they will be here to investigate. live in union city, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. in the east bay right now, chopper 5 is showing -- you see there in the left hand corner of your screen -- a large pallet fire in richmond. smoke can be seen from the freeway. joining us by telephone in richmond is jeffrey schaub from kcbs radio. >> reporter: this is an industrial area of richmond. about 2:15 this morning fire kicked up at a pallet company. other companies in the area have been damaged. i have the battalion chief with me. what's going on? >> we have a couple of acres of [ indiscernible ] burning nearby [ signal breakup ] probably a lightning strike is what we're guessing at this time that started. there's five difference businesses on this lot. it took off from the fire. the business in the back behind

the pallets in front are trucking businesses, hauling businesses, so we have a lot of equipment that's burned up in the back, trucks, vehicles. at this time we're surrounding the fire with lines and we have a dozer making fire breaks and separating the piles of fire. >> reporter: thank you, chief. that's the richard battalion chief turner. he says the fire that is mostly contained still kicking up a lot of dense smoke, but it's white smoke and that's a good sign. that's the theme here in richmond in this industrial area. reporting live, jeffrey schaub, cbs 5 and kcbs. >> thank you, jeffrey. thank you for that report. all right. now a chance of showers and thunderstorms today. lawrence was talking about lightning. >> yeah. so was the chief there in richmond. what's going on? >> can't verifier the ones in richmond. i was talking to the folks at kcbs. we haven't seen lightning strikes there you about we have seen plenty at the coast. the half moon bay area getting pounded and the san jose area last night seeing some rain coming down.

the whole case was convoluted from a legal point of view so ross mirkarimi is going to come back to work here as sheriff this morning. >> i want to mend fences with all parties. i look forward to demonstrating why the people elected me as sheriff and look forward for me and my family to now move in a place where we hopefully will achieve some normalcy. >> reporter: he spoke after the marathon board of supervisors last night lasted nine hours. in the end supervisors kim, olague, campos and avalos voted in favor of mirkarimi keeping his job despite pleading guilty to false imprisonment for bruising his wife's arm days before he was sworn in, in january. the ethics commission recommended he be removed from office permanently during a long public comment period yesterday we heard from both sides. >> we put him in office and if we want him out we'll take him out. >> you really need to ask

flames that started in a gry in los angeles this morning, five firefighters are hurt on the job. flames that started in a grassy area destroyed a three-story commercial building in the echo park neighborhood overnight. they had to shut down one lane. hollywood freeway because of the fire. all the injuries to firefighters were minor and they returned to work. well, boston man faces charges after authorities at los angeles international airport discovered several hazardous and suspicious items inside his luggage. quite a litany of things. it included a smoke grenade, a hatchet, knives, gas masks, biohazard suits and body bags. >> i was upset that they took my toothpaste from me at reno.

kind of glad they caught him here. >> yeah. kind of puts it into perspective. investigators say the man was wearing a bulletproof vest and flame retardant pants under a trench coat. he is charged with one count of transporting hazardous materials. >> a live look from the international space station. the dragon space capsule a privately built robotic spacecraft just arriving there this morning. it delivered half a ton of supplies a whole lot of food and ice cream too. this is the first commercial cargo delivery to the station a billion-dollar deal with nasa and spacex. so far, so good. >> i think it's a vanilla chocolate swirl ice cream. >> that's one of the better ones freeze dried or not. that's good stuff. >> i have had some of that before and it's delicious. a little dry. >> around the bay area today what a wild start to the morning. we have seen some thunderstorms outside. scattered showers continuing

with possibility of more isolated thunderstorms. check out your high-def doppler radar. you can see a lot of that active swirled back off the coastline. it's rotating around an area of low pressure that continues to spin off the coast but we're still seeing isolated showers and those could be good downpours near the 85 near saratoga and los gatos we have some good showers coming down with the possibility of some more isolated thunderstorms. all associated with that low that continues to rotate a little bit further to the south now. but some of these thunderstorms popping up through the half moon bay early on. and there's still plenty more that can rotate back in toward the bay area. so we are going to keep things unsettled for today with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. but i think that rain line heads further south as we head throughout the day today. so with that in mind could see some of those thunderstorms erupting into san jose and the santa cruz mountains as we head into the afternoon. staying unsettled until this area of low pressure moves out of town and finally into southern california later this week. so even tomorrow morning a slight chance of isolated showers. temperatures today not bad. partly cloudy skies in the

valleys mid-70s there. 60s and a few 70s inside the bay. the next couple of days things begin to settle down somewhat and that storm we were look at on friday looks like it's going to fall apart now, just some partly cloudy skies. warmer weekend with 80s on sunday. then monday looking good too just some partly cloudy skies. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we have some breaking news. possible street closure or at least delays right along diamond street getting word of a water main break between 18th and market so we're gathering more information. we'll get it to you as soon as we get it. on the maps another live look at some of our traffic sensors. this is the south bay. northbound 101 at oakland road, that is where we got an accident blocking at least one lane. delays coming up in those northbound lanes on 101. also heavy on southbound 880. they were doing some roadwork there by montague. elsewhere towards milpitas, 880/237, that's where we have one of our traffic cameras and you can see coming around the bend looks good so far as you head towards san jose.

so we wanted to show you drive times. the only one really slow right now is that westbound 580 drive no surprise through the altamont pass and livermore one of our first spots to usually slow down. but if you are coming down the eastshore freeway, that is not too bad. the nimitz and 24 so far no brake lights out of the caldecott tunnel out of orinda. elsewhere if you are coming down the eastshore freeway, this is actually a live look through berkeley. this is close to the ashby exit. so once again that drive time is still 18 minutes on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. so not a bad ride so far if you are heading towards the bay bridge toll plaza. coming up, we'll get a look at that. in the meantime, back to you guys. >> thank you. stock futures are mixed this morning just 45 minutes ahead of that opening bell. >> ashley morrison of cbsmarketwatch.com joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. concerns about corporate earnings sent overseas markets down this morning. tokyo's nikkei dropped 2% it a 2 month closing local while

hong kong's hang seng lost .25%. on wall street yesterday, stocks plunged after the international monetary fund said that the global economy is weakening and the downturn is spreading to other countries. the dow lost 110 points while the nasdaq fell 47. a warning for car owners who have had their airbags replaced in the last three years. the government will announce today they could be counterfeit and fail to inflate properly. it can affect tens of thousands of drivers. car owners are asked to check a government website, safercar.gov or go with your local dealer to see if your vehicle could have a counterfeit airbag. and just in time for the holidays, walmart will begin testing a same day delivery service. customers in select cities who buy popular items online will have them at their doorstep that day. walmart plans to test the service in san francisco and san jose later in october or in early november. walmart is trying to compete with amazon.com which is also
